$50k BOOST FOR LOCAL LIBRARY

Thursday, 14 March 2019

Minister for the Arts Don Harwin and Member for Lane Cove, Anthony Roberts today announced that Lane Cove will receive a boost to public library funding from the NSW Government.

Lane Cove Council will receive $50,000 for a mobile STEAM makerspace including robots, animation and maker kits, film and podcasting equipment for use by Lane Cove, Mosman and North Sydney libraries.

This is part of the State Government’s $1 million Metropolitan Public Library Grant program to support local libraries across the Sydney metropolitan area.

Mr. Roberts welcomed the Government’s support for Lane Cove Library.

“Our libraries are such a vital feature of our community and I’m delighted with today’s announcement,” Mr. Roberts said.

“We’re making our wonderful libraries even better and we’re ensuring that they continue to grow and evolve to meet our community’s needs.”

NSW Minister for the Arts Don Harwin said 14 councils will receive grants for projects this year to improve library buildings, spaces and information technology.

“Public libraries continue to grow and provide access to services that people need at all stages of their lives. The NSW Government is committed to working with local councils to enhance library services and facilities across the State,” Minister Harwin said.

“From next year the Government will allocate an additional $60 million over 4 years for public libraries – the biggest boost to public libraries in the history of our State.”

NSW State Librarian Dr John Vallance is pleased that the funds will enable councils to improve library spaces, technology and services.

“In my role visiting libraries across NSW, wherever I go I see the importance of quality library services, and the great community need for books, information and safe, welcoming public space. NSW public libraries are open to everyone, and the State Library is proud of its long partnership with these crucial institutions.”

The Metropolitan Library Infrastructure Grants program is administered by the State Library of NSW on behalf of the Library Council of NSW.
