The Member for Lane Cove, the Hon. Anthony Roberts, says he is not one to argue with the weather man – and the meteorologists are telling him to "expect a wet summer ahead".

"Wet to me," says Mr Roberts, "means rain on the roof and the question of how we get that water off without causing unnecessary structural damage."

"So, it's a case of undertaking that task we too often put off until it's too late."

"Through autumn and then winter leaves, twigs – even branches, fall, blocking our guttering."

"If this is left unattended, when the spring / summer rains come the water has nowhere to go but to backup; sometimes spilling over into the wall cavity between the outside and inside of home. This threatens our electrical wiring, walls, carpets and – in extreme circumstances, our furnishings."

"Don't get caught!" says Mr Roberts.

"Clean the guttering and clear your mind."

"Draw up a clear the gutters plan. If you are capable do it yourself, with care. If you are elderly or not so capable – is there a relative or neighbour who will / can help?"

"This summer enjoy the patter of the rain on the roof – not the inconvenience of the interior ruined by the rain," concluded Mr Roberts.
