"It's a fact," says the Member for Lane Cove, the Hon. Anthony Roberts MP, "that more people have an interest in sport than will ever play at their preferred code's elite level." "But then, not all of those keen to be involved need be A-grade sporting performers." "Last month Australia hosted Davis Cup tennis – and what a performance was put in by the lines' people and the ball boys / girls. This summer's Surf Carnivals will involve more people setting up and helping out then there will be competitors." Mr Roberts says "there is no shortage of Sporting Associations – either within or adjoining Lane Cove. "Sports, such as athletics, AFL, baseball, cricket, golf, hockey, lacrosse, lawn bowls / croquet, netball, rugby league or union, soccer, softball, tennis, touch football / Oz Tag, 'ultimate' Frisbee - to name some!" "While sporting associations need players, to make up competitive teams and rosters, they also need umpires / referees, gear carers, ground ticket sellers, lines' people, 'water boys', stats' keepers, timekeepers, administrators and the like," says Mr Roberts. "You don't need to have been on the 'field of play' to celebrate next time your favourite sporting group has its moment in the spotlight," says Mr Roberts. The MP is urging boys and girls with any form of sporting interest to, firstly, speak with their parents and then speak to the Executive of their chosen association. "Enjoy the outdoors – get involved with your nearest sporting body!" "It may take some hard work and discipline; but it could also give you travel, satisfaction and lifelong friendships," concluded Mr Roberts. |
