Rural SES in Crisis: Regional Headquarters infested with Termites Print E-mail

Reports today revealing a Rural SES Headquarters is termite infested and has asbestos ceilings propped up with planks of timber is just the tip of the iceberg, Shadow Minister for Emergency Services Anthony Roberts said today.

Cabonne Council has a report before it today stating that the SES Headquarters at Canowindra is termite ridden and dangerous, placing 13 volunteer members at risk.

“In the light of continuing cost shifting from state to local government it is only appropriate that the Iemma Government steps in and guarantees the safety of SES volunteers,” Mr Roberts said.

“These SES volunteers put their life on the line in times of crisis and deserve a safe working environment,” he said.

“The NSW Labor Government has to realise that this State extends beyond the Great Dividing Range.

“They need to step up to the mark and assist rural and regional councils in providing modern, safe, working environments for emergency service volunteers.

“The NSW Labor Government never seems to have any difficulty coming up with millions of dollars to employ Sydney spin doctors but never seem to find the energy, commitment or funds for vital local rural infrastructure.

“The State Emergency Service performs a vital role for the community, particularly in rural regional areas.

“They should be supported by Labor, not ignored,” Mr Roberts said.
