NEW FERRY SERVICE FOR LANE COVE Print E-mail

Local passengers will have an extra ferry route when a private operator begins a new peak service from Balmain West to Darling Harbour via Woolwich and Greenwich Point, Member for Lane Cove Anthony Roberts announced today.

Mr Roberts said he had been advised by the Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian that the new service was the result of the Government’s decision to encourage more use of the harbour, and follows the calling of expressions of interest from the private sector.

The new route will begin a Balmain West and travel via Woolwich, Greenwich Point and Birchgrove to Darling Harbour.

Sydney Fast Ferries, a private ferry operator currently providing services on the Manly route, will operate three morning peak services and two afternoon peak services on the new route.

“This is great news for Lane Cove ferry commuters who now have more services and destinations to choose from,” Mr Roberts said.

“Sydney Harbour is an uncongested highway of opportunity, and we want people to take advantage of that, get out of their cars and give these new services a go.

“The new route provides another ferry option between Lane Cove and Darling Harbour, improving transport options and capacity for local ferry passengers.

“This is about giving customers more options during the busy peak and offering the private sector a chance to demonstrate what can be achieved.

“The NSW Government is committed to improving and expanding the ferry network, and this is another step forward in our reform program.

“I encourage commuters to use these services as their continued operation will be dependent on support from local passengers.”

The operators will be responsible for determining when the new services begin and updates will be provided as the details are determined over the coming months. The services will be provided at no cost to taxpayers, with operators having control over fares and ticketing. Services will be provided on three month renewable agreements.
