Lane Cove Tunnel Opening Based On Labor’s Political Timetable Print E-mail

A further delay in the opening of the Lane Cove Tunnel was more proof the Iemma-Costa Labor Government was using the Tunnel as a political pawn in the lead up to the State election, Anthony Roberts MP, Member for Lane Cove, said today.

Mr Roberts said Connector Motorways CEO, Ian Hunt, today told Sydney radio the Lane Cove Tunnel was now likely to be opened in February - just a month before the State election.

“Labor is ensuring the month long toll free period takes place in the lead up to the State election,” Mr Roberts said.

“It’s clear that the opening of the Tunnel is based on the Iemma-Costa Labor Government’s political timetable.

Mr Stoner said news the Tunnel wouldn’t be open until February was just the latest in a string of sly moves from the Iemma-Costa Labor Government.

“The Lane Cove Tunnel was originally due to open by the end of 2006.  Then, the opening was pushed back to mid January.

“Now, for its own political advantage, Labor has ensured the Lane Cove Tunnel won’t open until February.

“This comes after Labor announced it would use $25 million of taxpayers’ money to ensure road surface works didn’t take place until after the State election - including the narrowing of Epping Road from 3 lanes general traffic to one.

“This new delayed opening date is another desperate attempt from the Iemma-Costa Labor Government to minimise voter backlash before the March 2007 election.

“Motorists deserve better. They won’t be fooled by this underhanded move by Labor to avoid another Cross City Tunnel debacle.”
