Anthony Roberts MP Judges illwarra's Best Catch Print E-mail

Shadow Minister for the Arts and Shadow Minister for Volunteering, Anthony Roberts

and Liberal Candidate for Wollongong, Michelle Blicavs met with local Cultural and Volunteering groups today.

"The Arts is a much neglected area throughout regional NSW.   I’m told around 60% of the NSW arts budget is spent within Sydney. It’s about time this State Labor Government recognised that there are communities living outside the CBD and help provide the services they deserve, Mr Roberts said.

“Local artists have shared their concerns with me over the lack of attention to regional arts programs and I am pleased that Anthony Roberts was able to come today to hear how vital support for culture is to Wollongong and our region.” Said Mrs Blicavs.

"One of the great things about being Shadow Minister for Volunteering, is the fact that I am fortunate to meet with people such as Sharyn Mackenzie, who has been named Volunteer of the Year for the Illawarra Region.  Sharyn’s work with local refugees through SCARF is a credit to the Illawarra and to NSW.

"I was fortunate today to also meet many of the selfless people who give of their time to assist with Meals on Wheels, Careways and other local organisations.  I am always humbled by their generosity of heart,” said Mr Roberts.

"Since becoming am MP, I have been asked to judge several competitions but being one of the judges of Illawarra's Best Catch is a highlight.  "The five candidates are remarkable men and wonderful role models for the youth of NSW,” said Mr Roberts.

"I must say that during my visit here today, I have been particularly impressed by Liberal Candidate Michelle Blicavs' love of the 'Gong and passionate commitment for the local community.

Mrs Blicavs is proud to be associated with Best Catch which is now its 5th year.  “Most volunteering is done sacrificially by very humble people.  These young men have such a bright future and even in their busy work and study schedules find the time to spend it with other people in need.” Mrs Blicavs said.

“I am pleased that the Best Catch Foundation supports other local charities such as my|place youth housing.  There are too many young people on our streets or sleeping on friends couches.  The funds raised to support this service will be very welcome.”  Mrs Blicavs said.

"The Illawarra can not only boast about its dramatic landscapes, pristine beaches, and scenic drives, it can and should boast about it's people, their friendliness and their great achievements, said Mr Roberts.
