Residents are being reminded to take simple measures to reduce the spread of colds and flu, Anthony Roberts MP, Member for Lane Cove said today. Mr Roberts said the NSW Government’s Winter Illness Campaign ‘The Spread of Flu is Up To You’ is underway to educate the public regarding the illness.
“The Government has allocated $300 000 for the radio, online and outdoor advertising campaign to curb the impact of the flu on the public and the health system. “Advertisements will also appear on Facebook, targeting the 16 to 24 year olds who are less likely to be immunized or take time off work if they are sick. “While influenza is preventable, it is expected to affect between 10 and 20 per cent of people as it is easily spread through the air. “The concern is that influenza affects individuals in different ways so the campaign is really about protecting the vulnerable.” Mr Roberts said flu vaccinations were available through GPs, but once sick, individuals need to do their part to prevent the spread of influenza. “Strategies such as covering your face with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, washing hands thoroughly and frequently, and staying home if you have the flu so you do not infect others, will help to stop the spread of influenza. “If you are sick and have concerns, call your GP or Healthdirect Australia on 1800 022 222, unless it is an emergency which requires a 000 response.” Mr Roberts said following the campaign’s message will assist in protecting the community. “NSW health care workers work extremely hard during the winter period. “Figures show admissions between July and September increase by six per cent and the average length of stay increases by two per cent.”
